Behind the façade of the listed Salzburg Justice Center lies a milestone in sustainable construction. The renovation and extension of the building was awarded the State Prize for Architecture and Sustainability on September 30, 2019.
The architectural design was carried out by the renowned firm Franz and Sue ZT GmbH. Our contribution was in structural engineering and building physics.
Technical milestones of our contribution
- Old building: Securing and fireproofing delicate existing ceilings, partial gutting and additions in accordance with current building regulations, acoustics optimization of the courtrooms.
- New building: Innovative Y-shaped administration building with underground archive; underpinning of the foundations using DSV columns up to 10 m deep; structurally sophisticated suspension systems for a wide-span glass façade.
- Building physics: Energy performance certificate class C for the listed existing building (taking into account strict monument protection requirements), class B for the new buildings with high-quality building envelope; special acoustic requirements in courtrooms and offices.
Sustainability that sets an example
It is particularly noteworthy that, for the first time in Austria a listed federal building has been awarded the klimaaktiv Gold certification as part of a renovation project. The new construction project also received the klimaaktiv Silber cerification and sets a benchmark for ecologically responsible architecture.
