New Vordernberg detention center

The new construction of the detention center in Vordernberg combines functionality, transparency and modern architecture to meet the special requirements of a detention building. The project was implemented by the Federal Ministry of the Interior as a “best practice” model and aims to create an environment that meets both the organizational requirements and the needs of the inmates.

The general planning team of Franz & Sue ZT GmbH approached this demanding task with a high level of professional expertise, social responsibility, and an open attitude toward public discourse – always aware of the political and social tensions associated with the project.
Our team was responsible for the structural design, building physics, and construction site coordination in this challenging project.

Architecture and structure

The building consists of two main areas:

  • Administration area: the three-storey administration building stretches along the street and serves as a central hub for organization and administration.
  • Detention areas: The two-storey residential wings for detainees awaiting deportation are aligned like fingers towards the mountainside and river. This arrangement creates courtyards and terraces that are assigned to the individual residential groups.

Integration and functionality

  • Integration into the surroundings: The targeted orientation of the building and the design of the outdoor facilities create a harmonious connection to the surrounding landscape.
  • Utilization concept: Although the building clearly conveys the character of a correctional facility, an environment was created that allows for humane accommodation. Communal areas and terraces promote social interaction and recreation within the structural guidelines.

Special structural features

  • Stable and durable construction: The building was constructed using reinforced concrete to ensure a high level of stability and adhesive strength. Areas with pressing water were designed as a sealed construction.
  • Flat roof: The roof construction complements the modern design and enables optimum use of the building space.
  • Optimized basic structure: The internal organization with five stairwells and three communal staircases ensures short distances and efficient processes.

The Vordernberg detention center sets new standards in terms of functionality and humanity in a sophisticated architectural context.
