International Christian School of Vienna – New School Building in the 22nd District

Modern school building with wooden façade, landscaped outdoor areas, and people walking and cycling.

Square, practical, forward-thinking

The new building for the International Christian School of Vienna (ICSV) is creating a modern school campus in Vienna’s 22nd district, with an architectural concept based on the requirements of the U.S. school system. The project combines innovative education spaces, sports areas, and sustainable construction into a future-oriented learning environment.

The design is by the architectural firm Franz und Sue ZT GmbH, which won the previous competition. Our team is involved in the planning process, providing structural engineering, building physics, and testing engineering services.

The school building is designed as a square, three-story structure and is complemented by a triple-pitch gymnasium. This facility serves not only for school activities but also as a multifunctional event hall for both school and community use. The gymnasium ceiling spans approximately 29 meters and is constructed using prestressed precast beams. Additional sports areas are located on the gymnasium ceiling, further expanding the range of activities available.

At the center of the building is a spacious atrium that serves as the school’s spatial and social hub and creates a bright and open atmosphere. The roof of the school building is also actively utilized: in addition to further sports areas, pergola structures are being built to provide shade while also being extensively equipped with photovoltaic modules.

The structural framework is constructed of reinforced concrete, thereby enabling large ceiling spans as well as small component dimensions for the load-bearing elements. We are pleased to be working together with the planning team and the client to ensure that this educational project is now being realized after a lengthy hiatus, thereby creating an important place for education and community interaction.
