The architectural office Juri Troy Architects won the invited competition of WKS Windkraft Simonsfeld AG “Energiewende Platz 1” 2022, supported in the technical implementation by our team.
The existing building and the sloping façade will be retained as far as possible and only in the future interior will the filling elements be removed and clad in drywall. The design concept provides for a high degree of prefabrication with maximum energy efficiency of the building envelope in terms of resource-efficient construction. The structure consists of repetitive elements of a timber frame construction, broken down into columns and beam as well as cross-laminated timber ceilings with a maximum span of 4-5 m in regular grid, highly insulated timber frame construction as filling and stiffening elements.
The exterior are placed on strip foundations with an STB base and ensure a maintenance-free and secure base connection. The structural timber protection is ensured by a circumferential walkway and cantilevered roof elements, which also serve as an escape route for shading and fire protection. Thanks to the simplicity of the construction, it is also possible to dismantle the building in accordance with the circular economy.
The building is cooled via component activation, cooling for the supply air and via the floor convectors. Direct cooling via the probes is possible up to a certain operating state. The heat pump is operated reversibly both for peak load coverage and for the cooling coils of the ventilation system. In addition, a recooler on the roof can be used to dissipate excess heat, which is supplied with sufficient electricity via the PV system. The clay mass storage in the core of the building supports both the cooling and heating of the building and provides comfortable heat and cold islands. An additional controlled night ventilation system with supply air via the façade and exhaust air into the courtyard supports the passive cooling of the building. The CO2 balance is calculated at building level and compares the CO2 equivalents of building components, consumers and photovoltaics. The primary energy demand SK, Co2 SK and the overall energy efficiency factor fGee thus achieve the best class A++.
The GWP of the main construction without building services is -18,277kg Co2 equivalents. Compared to conventional fossil fuels, the TGA concept saves a further 68% Co2 over a period of 20 years. In absolute terms, this amounts to -665,000kg Co2 -the investment in the alternative energy system pays for itself after around 10 years.
