The new Catamaran Vienna office complex at Handelskai 348 sets a striking urban accent in the east of the city.
This modern office building, which is characterized by its striking architecture and orientation towards the Danube, consists of two parallel wings connected by two transverse wings. This arrangement creates a spacious inner courtyard and two inviting forecourts. The two parallel longitudinal wings inviting forecourts. The two parallel longitudinal wings symbolize the hulls of a sailing catamaran, while the transverse wings, as connecting elements similar to the bridges of ship, reflect the proximity to the Danube and the dynamics of the water.
The load-Bearing structure of the building was constructed from reinforced concrete and is characterized by its robust design. Four core segments, slender columns and thin reinforced concrete ceilings from the basis for flexible use. Particularly noteworthy are the projecting building sections at the four ends of the building, each of which is supported by two mighty, truss-like horizontal beams and two large steel and glass composite cores, offering users an impressive view of the Danube.
An architectural highlights are the two “Sky Offices” on the 10th floor, which offer a unique panoramic view over the city of Vienna. A logistical and structural challenge was the almost simultaneous, jointless construction of the two longitudinal wings.
Highlights:
- Area: Over 40,000 m² of usable space
- Capacities: Meeting room for 300 people, canteen with 150 seats
- Parking facilities: Two underground levels with 323 parking spaces
- Architecture: Two “Sky Offices” with panoramic views
With a usable area of over 40,000 m², the Catamaran offers space for a variety of uses. In addition to the main office space, the entrance area also houses commercial uses, seminar rooms and a conference room with space for up to 300 people. A canteen with 150 seats provides for the physical well-being of the users. Two underground levels not only offer sufficient storage space, but also 323 parking spaces for vehicles. The ten upper floors of the building, including a technical floor on the 9th floor, underline the functionality and versatility of the complex.
The two longitudinal wings of the building along Wehlistrasse and Handelskai are 130 meters long and 17.5 meters wide. The transverse wings connect them and create an optimal room layout. The stairwells as well as the elevator and riser shafts are located at the four intersections of the wings and provide the necessary horizontal bracing for the building. The foundation is laid on a reinforced concrete foundation slab up to 1.5 meters thick, which ensures stability.
The standard floor slabs consist of point-supported flat slabs with an average thickness of 25 cm. The load-bearing support system has an axial grid of 7.5 meters in the longitudinal direction, while grid dimensions of 4.13 and 6.20 meters were used in the transverse direction. This construction method enables a high load-bearing capacity with great flexibility in the interior design.
The Catamaran Vienna office building not only embodies innovative architecture, but also sets an example for sustainable construction and urban integration. Located at the intersection of the Danube and the A23 city highway, it combines functionality, aesthetic quality and a special connection with the city and nature.
A project where everyone pulled together!
The collaboration with project management, the contractors Porr & Strabag, and especially with Bmst. Ing. Martin Sieger as the design representative was always professional, constructive, and on equal footing.
