Revitalization of the Mattersburg Cultural Center – Brutalism meets lightness
The Mattersburg Cultural Center, built in 1976 and protected as a monument of brutalism, was given a contemporary reinterpretation thanks to the careful renovation planning by HOLODECK architects ZT GmbH. In close consultation with the Federal Monuments Office, a concept was developed that combines the raw concrete aesthetics of the 1970s with the modern lightness of today.
While the historic façade and parts of the existing structure remained unchanged, the building was structurally and physically upgraded for its new purpose. The transition to the new foyer, with its filigree steel and glass construction, creates transparency and openness – a striking contrast to the massive existing structure.
A floor-to-ceiling reinforced concrete truss spans the new event hall and also supports the main level of the archive – a technically and creatively outstanding element.
How can the character of listed buildings be preserved while at the same time leading them into a contemporary, functional future?
